Container groups (areas)

A container group is a labelled box that holds related tables. It's a visual aid for organising large schemas — it is not a database object and produces no SQL.

Creating a group

  • Edit → Add area
  • Right-click an empty part of the canvas → Add area
  • Visuals → Areas → + New area

You can also draw one with the Select & group marquee.

Editing a group

  • Label: edit the pill on the box, or the Group name field in the Visuals panel.
  • Colour: pick from 8 swatches. The border is dashed when idle and solid when selected, and the fill is tinted.
  • Resize: drag any of the 8 handles.
  • Move: drag the box — the group and every table inside it move together.

Attaching & detaching tables

  • Attach a table by right-clicking it → Add to {group}, or by dragging it inside the box — the area re-fits to include it.
  • Detach a table with right-click → Detach from {group}.

Collapse, hide & delete

  • Collapse or hide a group with the chevron on its label or the eye icon in Visuals.
  • Delete a group via right-click or the Visuals trash icon — the tables inside stay on the canvas; only the box is removed.

:::tip The sample groups Acme Storefront splits its six tables into two groups: Catalog (categories, products) and Sales & Fulfilment (customers, orders, order_items, payments). Grouping like this keeps a growing schema readable at a glance. :::
